REBUILDING
SDG 4: Quality Education

In year 2015, United Nation announced the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which was adopted by all United Nations Member States. The core of this agenda is the 17 Sustainable Development Goals which call for action from everyone.

One out of the 17 goals is Goal 4: Quality Education which is the education goal that aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”.

Under this goal, countries, organizations and individuals are working together to accomplish what was desired under 10 different targets

EFFECT OF PANDEMIC ON THE EDUCATION

Due to the pandemic, quality education of many students have been jeopardized. Around the world, several impacts were notably seen and highlighted by the United Nation.

In Malaysia, many students have not been able to attend schools for nearly up to 1 year. This has caused a huge delay in their studies progress. Other more apparent impact which are seen are such as those who are sitting for the national examinations would have to postpone their examination and thus causing a delay in graduation of secondary level of education.

Besides that, in order to continue the process of learning during the pandemic, the government has came out with different measures such as to introduce remote learning for students. However, due to the lack of financial capabilities of students’ families as well as proper IT infrastructure and devices, this measure remains out of reach for many especially for those who are staying in rural areas.

The Story
Flagship Project
School Of Hope

The JCI Kinta’s School of Hope project has been the chapter’s flagship project since 2017. In this project, JCI Kinta has been working very closely with one of the school in Kinta area which is SJK(C) Chung San in nurturing the interest of study in their students.

Up to date, many have received financial supports from this projects which would help to reduce the burden of the receiver’s family. Naturally, the project also receive a huge coverage from the media as well as gratitude from the schools and students.

Besides financial support, JCI Kinta also often work closely with the school to provide a more in depth support to the learning of the students. Activities such as mentoring programme were conducted to understand and enlighten the issues being faced by the students. Also, programmes which link students closer to the industry and community were also conducted to create an awareness about the society for the students.

The Vision
Project Goal

The School of Hope project has been the flagship project of JCI Kinta since 2017 and has not taken a rest since commencement. The aim of this project is to serve a group of youth, specifically those who are in primary schools in developing their interest in pursuit of education.

However, as the pandemic has brought upon many changes in the education system in Malaysia, JCI Kinta proposed to revamp the conventional idea of just providing financial aids for the students to a bigger picture of impactful and sustainable project.

Thus, JCI Kinta would like to introduce the ‘School of Hope: Rebuilding’ project. Under this project, the origin goal of providing financial aids to needy and academic achiever students would remain. In addition to that, three more goals will be set under this project which are ‘Physical Building’, ‘IT Infrastructure’ and ‘Students’ Devices’.

Besides that, the new project would also benefit more schools and students in Perak state instead of just one focus school.

2021
School of Hope Main Goals

As the pandemic has brought upon many stops and changes in the education flow in Malaysia, JCI Kinta would like to revamp the idea of the conventional School of Hope project to a project which could understand and solve the current needs of the community.

In this new project, 4 main goals were identified for the ‘School of Hope: Rebuilding’ project and thus would require support from many individuals, philanthropist and organizations.

Physical Building

Many schools which have been established since many years ago are now facing issues with the physical building as well as it’s physical assets.

IT Infrastructure

As the pandemic has speed up the need to change for a digital learning system, many schools still struggle to cope with the new system due to lack of IT infrastructure in the school.

Students' Devices

As schools are picking up with digital learning, some students might find it hard to cope with the new changes. One major reason is due to the lack of the access of a personal smart device for learning.

Financial Aids

Families were hit badly in term of financial due to the pandemic. Thus, supplying their children with the necessary items needed for schooling might be difficult for them.
